“Share the power of a wish”

An appeal to you from the “Pick Me Up” Team:

These children face life-threatening diseases that they battle with everyday. In that moment they realize their greatest wish is being fulfilled, they forget about their pain and suffering and instead are greeted with joy, hope, and love. The evidence of this, hopefully, pulls them through and presents a new beginning.

It is easy for us to fulfill our wishes, with a little money and time. Unfortunately, it is not the same for these children.

The ‘Pick Me Up’ team hopes that supporters out there feel it in their hearts to reach out to these children who could use some light in their lives. Your small part in this will snowball into a life-changing experience that usually moves the children to tears.

Join us in our fight for theirs.

MAW - Wish Drawing

Make-A-Wish Foundation® Singapore is part of a global organization which began in 1980. The inspiration for our mission – ‘To grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses’ came from one very brave 7 year old boy who lived in Phoenix, Arizona.

Chris Grecius had Leukemia and his greatest wish was to become a policeman. So, his friends, family, and community rallied around to make this dream come true; they had a police uniform tailor-made for him, organized a ride in a police helicopter and had the full VIP treatment as he was presented with his police badge. He experienced such joy and was clearly delighted to have achieved his ambition despite his illness.

Sadly, Chris passed away a few days later, but everyone was so touched by the experience that they vow his legacy would live on. Now, more than 144,000 wishes have been granted worldwide and many brave children have experienced the power of a wish.

Singapore’s Immediate Goal

It is the foundation’s goal to reach every medically eligible child in Singapore and to make their wishes come through! Some of the wishes granted so far include:

  • Fadillah’s Shrek-Pirate themed party that took him through adventures that led to his much-awaited treasure – a Playstation 3!
  • Inda’s unforgettable night at a sea-side restaurant eating her favorite food – Pizza, and then receiving a huge surprise - Meeting Hady Mirza, Asian Idol 2007, who presented her with a PSP set and a bicycle!
  • 6 year old Ryan’s trail of paw prints that led him to his new furry companion – a puppy!
  • Kyle’s first night sleeping alone in his newly made-over room filled with a Space Ship bed, a galaxy painted wall and 5 boxes of Star Wars memorabilia including collectors items from Lucasfilms, Singapore and California.
  • 4 year old Arvin’s passion for cars came alive with his custom designed motorized state-of-the-art F1 wheelchair that whizzed him several rounds in his race circuit!

(The above passage and stories are extracted from the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Singapore’s newsletter “Wishing Well”, December 2007 issue.)
