More about the challenge- At 11am on Friday, the team set off on a unique challenge to distribute a target of Pick Me Up books to the public, and by their conclusion at 1am, Saturday morning, they have even overceded it! 60% of the proceeds from this challenge will go towards Make-A-Wish Foundation^® (Singapore) and the remaining 40% to the raising of a social enterprise.

THANK ALL OF YOU who have put in your support and goodwill towards the enjoyable success of this challenge! Your kind acts will go a long way in granting a magical wish for the Wish Children from Make-A-Wish Foundation. Preparations are already underway for the official handover of the proceeds raised and all donations received to Make-A-Wish Foundation.

What the event is about 

We would like to invite you to make the granting of Charmaine’s wish of being published author a memorable one. Charmaine’s book will be launched at the World Book Fair, Suntec City Convention Hall, Level 4, Booth number 4EO1, on the 31st May 2008, from 3pm to 5pm.

The story that Charmaine has written over the past few weeks would be the highlight of the book. Charmaine and her mother would be invited up on stage during the book launch to share her experience of writing the book. After her sharing, she would be having her first autograph session. This event would definitely be a memorable experience for her. 

The Pick Me Up team would like to invite you to grace this significant event and share our vision of inspiring people to make a difference to their lives. This will be an event not to be missed!

More about Charmaine

Charmaine is only 13 and she is suffering from end stage kidney failure, on top of a congenital eye disease which led to her being visually impaired today. She wished to write and publish a book. The good news is her wish will be granted ! Below’s an excerpt of her book (Foreword) by her principal doctor, Dr Yap in NUH.

“Charmaine came to us in June 2007. She was only 12 years old then. That was also the turning point in her young life because shortly after, she reached end stage kidney failure and had to depend on dialysis. What was also worrying us was her deteriorating eyesight. Her eyesight has already been affected by her congenital condition since she was 7 years old, but she managed to complete primary school education in a mainstream school in spite of being able to read only with a severely restricted field of vision. Instead of being hindered by her failing eyesight, she developed a voracious appetite for reading. Whenever she was hospitalized she would bring her big lamp with her so that she could read story books. It came as no surprise to us that Charmaine’s greatest wish is to write and publish a story book. This is her first endeavor, and we know that this will not be her last because she is a determined girl. We hope that other young people will be inspired, just as we are, by Charmaine’s inner strength, to continue to meet challenges and live life to the fullest.”

 One reader has taken her time to share her story with us. Her name is Louisa Okon, and right now she is in Perth, Australia on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a novelist as well as working on her radio career! Louisa dropped us an email one month ago and shared her story on her struggle and how she’s managed to be picked up.

RIDING HIGH… OR MAYBE NOT!

Two years ago if anybody were to have told me that the next two years of my life was going to be filled with complete and utter loneliness, depression, desperation and more alcohol than I could of ever imagined – I would never of believed them!I have always been a free-spirited person especially after meeting my brother’s Swedish ex-girlfriend who sat me down and explained to me that there are two different types of people in the world: “People who do nothing about their dreams and people who execute their dreams!” That was all I needed… After that I left my part-time job of five years, left home and traveled the world!

Then in 2006 an opportunity landed at my feet, one I simply couldn’t resist! It was an opportunity to move to Perth, Australia and gain ‘hands on’ experience within a local community radio station, so off course I thought “why not!” It was the thrill of yet another adventure that pushed me to pack my bags, leave my hub in London and move to the other side of the world! The only way was up for me, what could possibly go wrong?

However, the experience didn’t quite turn out how I expected it to be or even wanted it to be. I found it hard to make friends in my new home (which really hurt as I am one of the most gregarious girls in the world!). The part-time jobs I took up to further aid my finances turned out to be a nightmare after nightmare after nightmare! And moreover, I had lost my enthusiasm for my career! I was completely lost within myself and in this world! This new state of low caused me to act out of character: I became ‘desperate’ especially for friendships and I stupidly pinned my belief of happiness on external factors one being a boyfriend – “that surely didn’t work!”

Then my dear sister sent me a copy of (a film on attraction) and that started me on my road to self-discovery and personal development. I was enthusiastic and motivated again and wanted to learn more and more about this new subject! I read as much as I could, attended seminars, anything I could possibly get my hands on! And what happened next: people who have now become some of closest friends started to appear in my life, I was now beginning to build a social network in Perth – would you believe it!

I am again motivated to get back into my radio career and writing this short piece has encouraged me to take my first steps to becoming a novelist something that I’ve wanted to do since I was 6-years-old!

I could have never of guessed that I would of reached such a low ebb after riding so high so long! But now I am mentally stronger to handle the punches that life has to throw at me!

To Louisa: It takes courage to follow our dreams, and to move from your home in London to a new city is such a powerful choice for your dream in your career. These two years must have been a tough struggle for you and one way of acknowledging them is that they are challenges set for us to ovecome. And, the skills and strength that you gain out of it will be used for further tests down the road.

For every breakdown, there will be a breakthrough. For every bottom we reach, there will be an up we’ll go through. As long as we keep pushing ourselves towards out dreams. Kudos for not giving in to the circumstances and pushing on Louisa!

The affiliate team from Pick Me Up has been working on the release of Pick Me Up’s latest package, the “Pick Me Up Today” Video Workshop! It all started when we started sharing our stories on how we received help and guidance by friends and family, even strangers until one of us popped a question, “What about we teach others how to pick themselves up, instead?”

And that’s how the idea for the Video Workshop came out. Kelvin, being the Master Certified Coach sought to show us. His professional experience and knowledge after having coached for more than 10 years has been very eye-opening. And he did a whole classroom session about the topic.

It’s full of insights and learning and it’s worth 3 hours long. Over here, he shares with us:

• The context behind falling into the many pit-holes of life (relationships, career, finance etc)
• The common experiences of being stuck in the holes
• How to identify if you are stuck
• How to get out of it (Pick Yourself Up)
• And how to apply it to everyday life

He also did a real life coaching session with a participant in the classroom. At the end, Kelvin coached her out of her stuckkness on personal project of drawing manga. As a bonus, even revealed to her and the class, the ’secret of happiness’.

It’s fun and have been a breakthrough. The Pick Me Up team is proud to be able to bring it to you.

Your Pick Me Up Team

It means challenging all the beliefs you ever had in your life. It means plunging in to what you truly hold dear to and putting your heart and soul into it. It means to let go off all the people saying to you, “You cannot do it! It’s ridiculous!” And, it means putting in every ounce of strength and effort you’ve ever had (or didn’t know you ever had!) in your body

However, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. It doesn’t mean it can be done always. And it certainly doesn’t mean that just by doing the above, things come out the way you always want it to.

Just never give up.  Only keep moving forward. To add, a wise lady even said to us, “Even if you fall, fall forward.”

Till now, we have fulfilled a wish child’s dream, touched the lives of Singaporeans and the World, and raised funds for society! Proud milestones that we would have never imagined would come as a result from that one night on 11th January. The world has expanded for us, and so have our selves!

Next week, we will officially give the Big Ang Pow for the wish children and Make-A-Wish Foundation®. It’s exciting and we’re pumped up to make it a great event for all! Pick Me Up invites you to come along and share the joy with each other.

grant Nathalie’s wish.   Especially Christine and  Ricardo who hv spent so
much effort in making it possible,  like spending weekends watching “High
School Musical”, liasing with so many parties to bring out the best.  To Pei
Leng and hubby who have helped in coordinating and attending to the details.
